Luxury brands can no longer simply destroy unsold fashion products in Europe. PERIOD.
This is where HAUTÉBOOK WAREHOUSE program is making difference.
A new European Union rule that took effect on July 19, 2026 prohibits large fashion companies from destroying unsold clothing, shoes and accessories covered by the regulation.
For years, excess inventory created a major problem for luxury houses. Discounting too much could weaken exclusivity, flood the resale market and make rare products feel less valuable. Please browse through the attached images to get the full picture.
The issue became especially controversial after Burberry revealed it had destroyed approximately £28.6 million worth of unsold products in a single year. The brand later ended the practice in 2018.
Now luxury companies may need to rely more on repair, resale, donations, recycling, material recovery and better inventory planning.
This does not mean Chanel, Louis Vuitton or Prada will suddenly appear in discount stores. Brands can still protect their pricing and scarcity—they simply need alternatives to destroying eligible inventory.
Hence we introduced Store display models, Runway pieces, Photo shoot pieces program early this year and luxury brands are responding favorably — from Rolex to Dior and Cartier to Gucci and even Chanel & Hermés are ready to listen and adopt
Another dynamic coming into play is what I call the Gen Z factor.
For Gen Z, luxury is being redefined. Their outlook is shaped by sustainability, circular fashion, and conscious consumption. ♻️ Rather than chasing runway looks or celebrity-driven trends. They place greater value on authenticity, individuality, and longevity.
They are increasingly choosing pre-owned and vintage pieces over buying new, and many are unwilling to accept the frequent price hikes imposed by leading luxury brands. To them, the story, craftsmanship, and timeless appeal of an item often matter more than having the latest release.
This shift in consumer behavior is prompting luxury brands to rethink not only their products and pricing, but also how they engage with a generation that views luxury through a very different lens.
That is where our warehouse store display program plays an important role—helping brands showcase their unsold display collections and aligned with the evolving Gen Z mindset.
There are 2 more factors driving this shift - Quiet Luxury and Love for Vintage. I will try to address them in detail in my next blog.
Would you rather see unsold luxury products discounted, donated or recycled?
Let me know? I am all ears👂 Bobby
Luxury handbag sales are down $8 billion from their 2023 peak.
The Mini Kelly is everywhere on social media. Resale is up 20%. Vintage searches jumped 131% in a single month.
In our observation — The customers have not lost interest in luxury. They have lost interest in new luxury.
We sold 100+ luxury watches this year and in last 10 days we have sold 10+ classic vintage watches and countless Chanel, LV, Gucci classics.
Knowing fashion history is the new status symbol. Buying vintage is the new flex. And the brands built entirely on selling new bags now compete with their own back catalogue.
Scarcity is not just a supply strategy. It is a brand protection strategy. That’s why only Hermés is surviving the storm ☔️

Zen & Fact of Luxury : Weekend Truth
There is a silent contract between a luxury maison and its customers. It isn't merely about craftsmanship. It is about TRUST.
When we buy into a brand like Hermès, we are not simply purchasing leather or silk. We are investing in the belief that every product leaving the atelier has met an uncompromising standard—one that justifies the years-long waitlists, premium pricing, and legendary reputation.
Recently, I visited the Hermès boutique in Ginza, Tokyo—one of the brand's flagship locations. What I saw surprised me.
Several display shoes showed noticeably deteriorated soles, despite being showroom pieces. Whether caused by age, storage conditions, or the materials themselves, the visual impression was difficult to reconcile with the image of perfection that Hermès has spent generations cultivating.
What surprised me even more was the response of the Japanese concierge.
Rather than acknowledging the issue, the explanations felt rehearsed and dismissive.
Perhaps there were legitimate reasons. Perhaps there weren't. But luxury is as much about accountability as it is about craftsmanship.
When customers begin questioning explanations instead of admiring products, something has shifted.
This isn't a story about one boutique. Nor is it an indictment of Hermès.
It is a reminder that even the world's most admired luxury houses are not immune to the pressures of scale. As demand grows and production expands, maintaining legendary standards becomes increasingly difficult.
Luxury does not lose its reputation overnight. It loses it one overlooked detail at a time.
One imperfect stitch. One deteriorating sole. One customer whose concerns are explained away rather than understood.
Perhaps this is not the end of luxury. Perhaps it is simply a reminder that excellence must be earned every single day.
The real question is - If Hermès start comprising and Japanese start misleading, can we trust anything, is world coming to an end ✌🏾
